Give your satisfied customers a couple of your leaflets or cards and explain to them that you are looking to take on extra work. Tell them that their help would be appreciated and it would make a big difference if they could recommend you to others.
You could also offer an incentive to your customers in return.

Offer something free to begin a relationship with your potential customers, a free survey, free sample, free report relevant to your business etc. If there is no risk involved for your potential customers, they will be happy to give you their contact details. You can then start selling to them later.

Get yourself a website. This is essential. If you do not have a website, I guarantee you are losing money. Many people look for services online and usually in the evening. A simple website with a contact form and email address will do wonders for your business.

Make up an excuse to get in the paper. Papers and magazines would go out of business if they did not have something to write about. Have a good read of a few stories in your local paper, come up with something for yourself, and send it in. This will give you some excellent exposure. It is easier than you think to get some free publicity.

Your existing customers are your goldmine. What else can you offer them related to your existing business? You need to tap into the relationship with your existing customers.

Do you want to go large? How many times have been you been asked that at Mcdonalds? This is called ‘up selling’ It costs nothing to up sell and you make additional profits instantly. Be sure to offer your customers extra products or more expensive versions of your product. Some customers want the most expensive.

In your advertising, is it all about you? Do you go on about how long you have been going and how great you are etc? Your potential customers simply do not care. All they want to know is what is in it for them. You can still tell people how long you have been in business but you must explain how that is of benefit to the reader. Remember, what’s in it for them and how are you going to make their lives easier.

Use the Magic Word in your message. How many times does the magic word 'You’ appear in your message on letters, in emails, on your website etc? By using the words ‘You’ or ‘Your’ you are forced to make your message conversational and your readers will be much more receptive to what you are saying.

Marketing is the key to success. You could have the best product, the best service and the best website but if nobody knows about them what is the point. There are dozens of ways to get new customers into your business, and many of your competitors are not implementing these strategies.

Once you have a webpage try Google Adwords (Pay Per Click Advertising). This will get people to your site fast, you can set a daily ad budget or turn it off whenever you like. Imagine having a newspaper ad and only paying a small fee when someone actually rings you up. You only pay when someone clicks your ad and goes through to your webpage. If you then offer them something free on your site in return for their contact details you will have a marketing tool that is going to bring you a nice steady flow of potential customers.
